A Spooky Interactive Experience

While trolling the internet I came across something called “Hotel 626“. This website is an interactive haunted hotel that will only let you play the game during nighttime hours. Seriously, it’s only playable between 6pm and 6am. The game encourages you to turn off the lights and put on your headphones for the ultimate scary experience. It then takes your picture with your webcam and tells you to turn on your computer’s microphone. Then the real fun begins.

This site stuck with me because it was a fun, scary indulgence. The games were simple enough, but they were varied enough to keep me interested. Sometimes game play is difficult because the computer won’t cooperate or you just plain don’t know what’s going on, but there is a little help button that explains to you what task you are supposed to be accomplishing. The goal of the game is to escape from the hotel. Games include having to sing to one of the malevolent ghosts, figuring out the code to a locked door and using your mouse to balance on creaky floors so you don’t wake unfriendly spirits.

The storytelling technique they used was to put the user inside of the game. To give you instructions, they gave you vague phrases that you had to interpret in order to figure out what you were supposed to do to escape. The entire thing is really just a huge Doritos plug, so if this is how Doritos is appealing to customers, they definitely picked an original way to do it.

I’m always down for the spooky. Ghost stories and hauntings were my thing growing up, so an interactive haunted house would definitely make me stop and play. On one hand, the limited time frame to play is interesting and off putting to me. Because you can only see it during the night, it makes it even scarier. At the same time, if I find this site during the day, I might not come back at night to see the full of it. You win some, you lose some I guess. The fact that you can be committed or check in to the hotel provides a story like background for the site. One thing though, what if you don’t have a microphone. It might make it hard to complete tasks, and limits who can use the site. But for Doritos, this is an elaborate Web site that provides fun for users, and reminds audience of the fun of Doritos.
